En un lugar de la Sangre (In a place of the Blood) is an oral and pianistic suite inspired by the personality of Miguel de Cervantes and the essence of his greatest novel. Its title is a variation of that novel’s first sentence: “En un lugar de la Mancha...” (In a place of La Mancha). The work appeared in 2006 as a limited-edition book/CD/DVD containing the suite, the rhythmic scores of the poems, a video of the composer playing two of the suite’s eighteen pieces, and a series of drawings by contemporary artists created especially for that volume. For David Rosenmann-Taub, the arts share a common purpose: “In my mind, there is no separation between the activities of music, poetry, and drawing. Every work has its law: I use the medium that I find best suits its expression.”
Sonority and thought are inseparable for this artist, who creates rhythmic scores for his poems. Classical resources and traditional forms play only a small role in this suite. The alternation between voice and piano reveals another organizing principle: oral and pianistic expression. Each poem (apart from “Dedicatoria” [Dedication] and “Vale” [Farewell]) has its corresponding musical ‘cuadro (image or tableau).
En un lugar de la Sangre is the reflection of a composer/poet in which each instrument – word and piano – helps and increases the resources of the other: two paintbrushes at the service of one

En un lugar de la Sangre es una suite oral y pianística inspirada por la personalidad de Miguel Cervantes y la esencia de su novela mayor. El título: una variación de la primera frase de la novela: “En un lugar de la Mancha”. La obra apareció en el año 2006 como un libro/CD/DVD de difusión limitada. Contiene la suite, las partituras rítmicas de los poemas, un video del compositor en que toca dos movimientos de los dieciocho de la suite, y una serie de dibujos, creada especialmente, por artistas contemporáneos. Para David Rosenmann-Taub, las artes comparten un propósito común: “En mí, no hay separación entre la actividad musical, la actividad poética y el dibujo. Cada obra tiene su ley: uso el medio que se ajusta más a su expresión.”
Sonoridad y pensamiento, inseparables en la producción de este artista, que crea partituras rítmicas para sus poemas. Los recursos clásicos y las formas tradicionales rigen sólo un ligero aspecto de esta suite. La alternancia de habla y piano revela otro principio organizador: expresión oral y pianística. Cada poema (no la “Dedicatoria”, ni “Vale”) tiene su correspondiente cuadro sonoro.

David Rosenmann-Taub was born in Santiago de Chile in 1927. From early childhood, he displayed a rare gift for music. His mother, a superb pianist, began teaching him before he had reached the age of two. Later, he entered the Conservatory of Santiago, where he studied piano with Roberto
Duncker; composition, counterpoint, and fugue with the famous composer Pedro Humberto Allende; musical methodology and dodecaphonic technique with Carlos Isamitt; and rhythm with Andrée Haas. Duncker urged him to devote himself full-time to piano, Allende to composing. Meanwhile, Rosenmann-Taub had already shown extraordinary abilities as a poet, and he was as committed to poetry as to music: both were part of his nature.
At twenty-one, he published his first book, to great critical acclaim. Other books followed, with a similar reception. He would become recognized as a major poet. Music, however, has remained an indispensable form of expression for him. His compositions, which freely mix tonality and atonality, range from the cosmic to the intimate. Virtuosity and a remarkable control of his instrument allow him to perform the works himself.
From the 1950s to the present, he has recorded a portion of these compositions. Over a hundred hours of his music have been archived by the Corda Foundation, which is devoted to the study and publication of the work of this artist. His initial release on the MSR label was Conversaciones (2010).
David Rosenmann-Taub nació en Santiago de Chile en 1927. Desde pequeño mostró un inusual don para la música. Su madre, consumada pianista, cuando él aún no cumplía los dos años de edad, le dio sus primeras lecciones. Más tarde ingresó al Conservatorio Nacional, donde estudió piano con Roberto Duncker; armonía, contrapunto y fuga, con el famoso compositor Pedro Humberto Allende; metodología musical y dodecafonía con Carlos Isamitt; rítmica con Andrée Haas. Mientras Duncker le exhortaba a ser concertista, Allende le quería compositor. Paralelamente, Rosenmann-Taub ya había mostrado un talento extraordinario como poeta, y estaba entregado tanto a la poesía como a la música: ambas le eran naturales.
Publicó su primer libro cuando tenía veintiún años, con una muy positiva acogida de la crítica. Siguieron nuevos libros, con la misma respuesta. Hoy es reconocido como gran poeta. La música, sin embargo, es en él una forma de expresión indispensable. Sus composiciones, en que tonalidad y atonalidad se hermanan libremente, cubren desde lo cósmico hasta lo íntimo. Virtuosismo y control asombrosos le han permitido ser su propio intérprete.
Durante la década de 1950 hasta el presente, ha grabado parte de sus composiciones. Más de cien horas de su música han sido archivadas por Corda, fundación que se dedica al estudio y la difusión de la obra de este artista. Su primer disco para MSR fue Conversaciones (2010).
