PROGRAM NOTES
American trumpeter Max Matzen is an active performer throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. He serves currently as a member of The Emerald Brass Quintet and maintains a thriving touring schedule as both a classical and jazz trumpeter. Matzen occupies the principal trumpet position of the American Festival Orchestra in Utah as well as principal and section trumpet of the Utah Festival Opera. He has also performed with the Rochester Philharmonic,  Jacksonville Symphony, Lubbock Symphony and Charleston Symphony. Matzen has given recitals and master classes at a variety of institutions worldwide and has performed and presented at conferences of the International Trumpet Guild, the International Saxophone Congress, Florida Music Educator’s Conference, Utah Music Educator’s Conference and the  Jazz Education Network (JEN) Conference. Matzen earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the
University of North Florida and a Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music in performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music, where he was a student of James Thompson. Matzen is a Yamaha Performing Artist.
 
Pianist Mayumi Matzen maintains an active career as a recitalist and soloist at the national and international level, with recent collaborations with fellow musicians, including violinist Mariko Umae (Augsberger Philharmoniker), trumpeter James Thompson (Eastman School of Music), mezzo-soprano Quinn Patrick-Ankrum (Cincinnati Conservatory) and trumpeter Travis Peterson (Utah Symphony). She currently serves on the piano faculty at Utah State University, where she teaches applied piano and coordinates the keyboard harmony program. She holds a Bachelor of Music in piano performance from Kyoto City University of Arts in Japan and both a Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music in piano performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music, where she was a student of Douglas Humpherys.
 
Harpist Chilali Hugo moves freely between classical and popular music, consistently seeking out new and invigorating performance experiences. She is the harp instructor at the Caine School of the Arts at Utah State University, and she maintains a productive freelance career as a soloist, chamber, and orchestral musician. While earning her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees at the University of Michigan, she recorded as a soloist with the University of Michigan Symphony Band under the direction of Michael Haithcock. Her principal teachers include Lynne Aspnes and Skaila Kanga.
 
Trumpeter Brett Long joined East Tennessee State University as Assistant Professor of Music of Trumpet in 2018. He maintains an active performance and recital schedule and has performed throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. Long joined ETSU by way of Rochester, New York, where he spent twelve years in a variety of teaching and
playing capacities. He has performed with the Rochester Philharmonic and Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra, Knoxville Symphony and Greensboro  Symphony as well as with members of the New York Philharmonic and Honolulu Symphony. He is also a founding member of the Emerald Brass, a dynamic quintet that has performed throughout the United States and Europe, including feature performances at the Coleman Chamber Music Competition and Frankenwald Brass Festival. He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music in trumpet performance and literature at the Eastman School of Music and received a Bachelor of Music Education from Mansfield University.
