REVIEWS
“all excellent players... Pavana is full of stirring, sometimes jarring sonorities that sound great as played by this ensemble with its well-matched sounds... I enjoyed [Inez McComas’s Spinner] very much... fine players...”
Kilpatrick, American Record Guide [January/February 2017]
“there are many individual highlights in this CD, and the exhilaration underlying the whole project comes through to a considerable degree... [these trombone quartets and quintets] show an awareness of where small-ensemble music has come from, even as they seek to move it into new territory.”
Mark J. Estren, InfoDad [June 2016]
“the whimsically named trombone quintet Tromboteam! is quite accomplished and the music, commissioned by the group is all worth hearing. [This is] a nice program of engaging, well-crafted music for trombone quartet and quintet... Tromboteam! can be pleased with what they have wrought, and the playing, captured in a lovely acoustic, is absolutely top-notch. Recommended to brass aficionados and to any listener wishing to spend an hour or so with some fine musicians engaged in a winning program of new music.”
Ronald E. Grames, Fanfare [May/June 2016]
PROGRAM NOTES
This album is a collection of pieces commissioned by TROMBOTEAM! in 2013. Funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign and private donations, these works were premiered in a single concert that summer. Upon receiving a Scholarly and Creative Arts Grant awarded by the University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Arts and Letters, the prospect of recording this music became a reality. During the creative process, the composers received little direction outside of a rough time constraint and a choice to employ four or five trombones. The resulting variety of styles, sounds, and techniques is therefore a testament to their creativity and talent. No two compositions sound alike, yet we find each to be appealing and accessible — a remarkable feat indeed! The entire process has been rewarding, and we are thrilled to share this terrific new music.TROMBOTEAM! seeks to inspire and entertain audiences throughout the United States. This unique chamber ensemble, formed in 2002, prides itself on performing music of different styles and periods. Committed to music education and the continued advancement of trombone chamber music, TROMBOTEAM! has provided master classes and recitals at numerous colleges and universities as well as being featured guest artists at the International Trombone Festival and the Eastern Trombone Workshop. Members of TROMBOTEAM! hold graduate level degrees from some of the top music schools in the country, including Indiana University, Florida State University, Yale School of Music, and Manhattan School of Music. Along with presenting numerous solo recitals and master classes, members have performed with several symphony orchestras, various chamber ensembles, and nationally touring Broadway shows. Although members of TROMBOTEAM! live and work in different parts of the country, the ensemble collaborates regularly. [ www.tromboteam.com ]
