Pianist Maila Gutierrez Springfield and clarinetist Sarah Cain are also quite capable in their roles. As for the whole Voices of Dissent concept, it may have been interesting to watch and hear how this event (and its political undertones) transpired but the music all stands on its own merits…  classical saxophonists everywhere should definitely check this disc out for both Cain’s playing as well as to discover some new, unusual work. Listeners not familiar with contemporary wind music should still find some interest as well.”

INTRODUCTION
In 2010, Joren Cain published his doctoral dissertation, centered on rediscovering the saxophone music of Fernande Decruck. Decruck’s works were largely forgotten after her death in 1954; until 2002, Marcel Mule’s 1954 recording of Andante et Fileuse was the only commercial recording of any of her saxophone works. In recent years, Decruck’s music has enjoyed a resurgence among saxophonists throughout the world, and this CD was created with this spirit of discovery and rediscovery for the listener. The repertoire on this disc showcases a wide range of current compositional techniques, as most of the works have been written in the last decade and are receiving their premiere recordings. Among the pieces included in this program, only two were written before 2000; one is Decruck’s previously unrecorded Danses autour du monde. The other is Astor Piazzolla’s Otoño Porteño, which is newly adapted from an arrangement for violin, cello and piano. Within Voices of Dissent, there are many new pieces to discover, as well as a few works ripe for rediscovery.

Joren Cain is a saxophone soloist well-versed in both classical and jazz idioms. A Chicago native, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Northern Illinois University, where he studied saxophone with Steve Duke. Dr. Cain continued his studies with Jim Riggs at the University of North Texas, where he was a member of the 2 O’Clock Lab Band and earned his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees. As an educator, Dr. Cain was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Northern Illinois University and a Teaching Fellow at UNT. He is currently Associate Professor of saxophone and director of the New Jazz Ensemble at Valdosta State University in Georgia. He has contributed articles to the Saxophone Symposium journal and GIA’s publication Teaching Music Through Performance in Jazz. Dr. Cain is committed to the study and performance of contemporary saxophone music and has commissioned more than a dozen works for the instrument. His solo performances across the United States and abroad, including Germany and the Czech Republic, have been applauded by composers Sammy Nestico, Alfred Reed and Jindrich Feld. Additionally, Dr. Cain served as a member of The United States Army Field Band for four years, performed as a featured soloist and was the soprano saxophonist in the TUSAFB Saxophone Quartet.
