REVIEWS
“This disc of Christmas music from MSR Classics, recorded live at a series of concerts at Battle Creek's W K Kellogg Auditorium in 2006-8 and 2010, is certainly very impressive.”
Keith Bramich, Music & Vision [December 2012]
“immaculately produced and engineered, this 31-member Brass Band of Battle Creek is a first-rate band whose excellence purely as an ensemble is clear in every measure; not just for individual excellence and virtuosity but their ability to blend and collaborate…. In addition to providing an appropriately warm acoustic for the more sentimental numbers, the ample spaces of Kellogg Auditorium provides its share of audiophile thrills including a spectacular euphonium solo by Steven Mead in “O Holy Night” and a big arrangement of James Pierpont’s “Motown Jingle Bells” by the Empire Brass Quintet’s legendary tubist, Sam Pilafian. In less than 40 minutes, the Battle Creek band says a lot.”
Laurence Vittes, The Huffington Post [December 2013]
“A swell stocking-stuffer is this hard-to-resist offering from the 31-member Brass Band of Battle Creek. They give us a rousing program of Christmas favorites heard in settings that are sometimes reverent and well-behaved and sometimes decidedly not. Steeped in the British brass band tradition of large ensembles of strictly brass and percussion instruments, there is a lot of scope and flexibility in these virtuosic arrangements…  My favorite of the whole program happens to be ‘O, Holy Night,’ featuring a solo on the euphonium by Steven Mead that is both mellow and poignant in its replication of the human voice.”
Phil Muse, Audio Society of Atlanta [January 2013]
“For [a bigger and brassier] set of tunes, check out… A Christmas Festival. This ensemble was recorded live in concert back in 2006 at the W.K. Kellogg Auditorium and turns in a performance that is by turns jazzy, witty, and grand. The program is a bit more varied than you might expect… This one is really lots of fun.”
Rick Anderson, Music Media Monthly [November 2012]
PROGRAM NOTES
The 31-member Brass Band of Battle Creek has been described as an All-Star band of the brass-and-percussion world’s elite, attracting great musicians from around the United States and Europe. The BBBC presents two annual concerts in Battle Creek, Michigan, as well as a limited number of other engagements in hand-picked locations across the United States and abroad. Though rooted in the British brass band tradition (characterized by large ensembles of strictly brass and percussion with no reed instruments or strings) the BBBC also weaves in wholly American elements, such as jazz improvisation, pops and swing, resulting in a hybrid style that makes the BBBC truly unique among brass bands.

Founded in 1989 by brothers Jim and Bill Gray, podiatrists and amateur brass players from Battle Creek, the Brass Band of Battle Creek has grown to cult status in that city, where BBBC concerts are regularly sold out and waiting lists are created weeks in advance. Trumpet legend Doc Severinsen, who has twice appeared with the band, said of the BBBC, “This band represents the beginnings of a new music movement in America. It’s one of the most accomplished groups I’ve ever worked with in my entire career.”
