PROGRAM NOTES
Encouraged by the enthusiastic reception accorded his first CD of transcriptions for horn, Kazmierz Machala has now recorded a second disc with a number of transcriptions from a variety of genres. These transcriptions are a welcome addition to the horn literature, providomg performers with a type of lyrical romantic line often lacking in the standard repertoire.
Kazimierz Machala was born in Poland, and received his early musical training at the Liceum Muzyczne in Lodz where he studied with Jozef Kret, and later in Czechoslovakia with Frantisek Solc. After his graduation with honors from the Janacek Academy in 1973 he was appointed Principal Horn with the Cracow Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 1974, we has awarded Third Price in the Prague International Music Competition, after which he moved to New York to study with James Chambers at Juilliard, becoming that school's first horn player to earn the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts. In 1979, Mr. Machala was appointed to the position of Principal Horn with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and was a member of the Australian Wind Virtuosi - positions he held for seven years. After his return to the United States in 1986 he taught at the University of Georgia for three years. PROGRAM
