"Robilette gives a fine
performance, and the orchestra plays very well. Competition is tough, but
Robilette holds his own...(He) plays the Mozart Rondo much the way Schnabel or
Edwin Fischer would have."

It is always refreshing to encounter
an artist of individuality, such as the American pianist John
Robilette,
whose style recalls the “old school” of Cortot and Schnabel,
with whose assistants he has studied. Since his Kennedy Center debut in
1984, Robilette has explored some unusual projects, including directing
a Government sponsored international artists programme; and repertoire,
aspects of which are evident here, especially the intriguing idea behind
his recording of Beethoven’s Fourth Concerto. The inclusion of cadenzas by both
Beethoven and Saint-Saens to be chosen and programmed in, at will, by the
listener, enables an unique exploration of the relationship between the
Classic and Romantic pianistic styles, enabling an aural comparison that
highlights fascinating similarities and contrasts of stylistic strategies.
For this feature alone, the CD is of compelling interest.
