have won competitions in both genres... The Trio for Flute, Viola and Harp (2006) is a modern
re-interpretation of Debussy’s Trio. It’s a work of harmonic
and rhythmic variety, especially adept at exploring some of the flute’s
musical possibilities. It alternates the dreamy reverie that Debussy finds in
that combination of instruments with frenetic, dissonant jazzy moments. Yet, it
also has beautiful melodies that could capture the hearts of audiences looking
for some tonal allure. It would make an effective part of a modern chamber music
program, especially if paired with the Debussy Trio that inspired it...
The Symphony No. 1 (2007) depicts the confrontation between “positive and
negative energies which dominate the human existence.” Movements one, two and
four are musical struggles where the composer creates tension by contrasting
percussion and brass (negative) and strings (positive) in an energetic tapestry.
The short third movement is jazzily percussive and only at the end of the last
movement is there some resolution to the struggle with a lyrical, quiet ending
(representing the triumph of the positive)... Donde el Viento nos Lleve (Wherever the Winds Takes us…) is a
fantasy for multiple percussion and harp that is an intriguing example of how an
all-percussive composition can be lyrical and still be declarative. It is very
well recorded. Three Enigmas (2009) for two pianos explores the
combination of jazz, classical and romantic thematic material with aleatoric
developmental techniques. The result is colorful, contemplative, dissonant and
unpredictable... The chamber works are very well recorded with the right combination of
clarity and reverberation." José Beviá graduated from the Valencia Conservatory of Music where he studied classical piano with José Luis de Prado; Berklee College of Music, and Florida State University where he earned a Doctor of Music Degree in Music Theory and Composition. Mr. Beviá has studied composition with Ladislav Kubík and Mark Wingate, and jazz piano with Marcus Roberts and Bill Peterson. He has also participated in composition seminars with Pulitzer Prize winning composer Ellen Zwilich, and has been a member of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop, where he studied with jazz composers Michael Abene, Jim McNeely, and Mike Holober. An Associate Professor of Music at County College of Morris in Randolph, New Jersey, Mr. Beviá has seen his classical and jazz compositions performed in Spain, the Czech Republic, The Netherlands, and the United States. His works have been commissioned by The Commission Project and the BMI Foundation Charlie Parker Composition Prize. At the same time he has been invited to present his music at the 2008 International Jazz Composers Symposium in Tampa, Florida; the Society of Composers National Conference in Turlock, California; the College Music Society National Conference in Portland, Oregon; and the Czech American Music Summer Institute in Prague, Czech Republic. The University of Northern Colorado Jazz Press publishes his compositions worldwide. Mr. Beviá is the winner of the 2006 University of West Florida Phillips Jazz Piano Competition, the winner of the 2007 BMI Foundation Charlie Parker Composition Prize, finalist at the 2006 Brussels Jazz Orchestra International Composition Contest, finalist at the 2009 Artez International Composition Contest in The Netherlands, and Honorable Mention at the Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute.
