"Can
music heal cataclysmic tragedies? Witness a fascinating new CD of the
distinguished Denver-born American pianist John Browning. In a live recital at
the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, a few hours after the
assassination of President John F. Kennedy, on November 22, 1963, Browning
announces to the audience that he was asked by the college’s president to go
ahead with the recital, and explains that he’s changed the program. He asks
the audience to rise for a Bach chorale, dedicated to the memory of the late
president. The ensuing fiery music, by Chopin and Schubert, is played with ideal
emotion and rugged grace. The music’s life-affirming, exalting nature seems to
affect the silent audience, which respects Browning’s request for no applause.
At the end of the concert, we hear the poignant sound of his footsteps going
offstage, after having created a brief interlude of artistic meditation to help
heal listeners."

"...patient
phrasing and heartfelt projection...purposeful sweep and steel-wristed
authority...technically staggering...moving, communicative music-making."
Classics Today - February 2006
"The
...program contains some of the most melting interpretations of Chopin which
Browning ever inscribed..."
