The character piece came into its own in the 19th century, and composers eagerly expanded their repertoire of this intimate genre. Much solo and chamber music was produced for a variety of instruments, but the horn was often relegated, with a few exceptions, to symphonic and military duties. Mr. Machala, therefore, has arranged a number of works for horn and piano as a contribution to the standard repertoire providing horn players with solo works of great Romantic masters.

Kazimierz Machala was born in Poland, and received his early musical training at the Liceum Muzyczne in Lodz where he studied with Jozef Kret, and later in Czechoslovakia with Frantisek Solc. After his graduation with honors from the Janacek Academy in 1973 he was appointed Principal Horn with the Cracow Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 1974, we has awarded Third Price in the Prague International Music Competition, after which he moved to New York to study with James Chambers at Juilliard, becoming that school's first horn player to earn the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts. In 1979, Mr. Machala was appointed to the position of Principal Horn with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and was a member of the Australian Wind Virtuosi - positions he held for seven years. After his return to the United States in 1986 he taught at the University of Georgia for three years.
